With camera complaints it matters whether the fault is in the protective glass over the lens or in the camera module itself. If only the glass cracks, the module is often still intact but stray light and dust reach the lens; photos turn hazy or halo around light sources. If the module is damaged, you see black frames, noise, or autofocus that keeps hunting.
A rattle when you shake the device often comes from failed optical image stabilisation: the magnetic lens suspension has come loose after a drop. It is audible, it is measurable, and it explains blurred photos in low light.

On most devices the front camera shares a flex cable with the proximity sensor and the ambient light sensor. If your selfie camera is dead and your screen stays lit during calls, that points to one shared cause rather than two separate faults. On Face ID devices the infrared camera sits in the same module and is paired to your handset — replacing it means losing face recognition, so we only do that after a clear conversation.
Dust under the lens
If every photo shows the same dark speck in the same position, a particle is sitting between lens and sensor. That is not a software issue and no other app will clear it. Depending on the model we can open and clean the module; where the construction does not allow it, replacement is the only route. We will say so plainly before we start.

Yes, because the crack lets dust and moisture reach the lens. While the module is still good, replacing only the glass is the lightest fix. Wait too long and the module usually follows.
Could it be a software problem?
Sometimes. A camera that stays black can also be caused by a stuck process or a failed update. That is why we always test with the stock camera app and after a restart before reaching for tools.
